How much does an average relocation cost?
A popular and practical box size for relocation is our standard 17kg box (56 x 43 x 35) cm. It costs ~SGD 400 to ship a box like this from Singapore to USA.
Many customers have a budget of SGD 2000 - 6000, meaning they would be able to ship 5 - 15 such boxes.
How can I get the most value for my money?
Items that are cheap, replaceable and bulky are more suited to be shipped slowly and at lower cost via sea shipping, or simply bought at the destination country.
To get a high return on their shipping, our customers often choose to ship items that tend to be more expensive, sentimental, or unique.
This exercise also can be beneficial to choose and focus on what's essential, so relocators not only save money on shipping but also save their time and energy in the later part of the process - having a minimalistic and fuss-free settle-down in their new homes.
Should I worry about taxes?
JustShip offers a value added pre-paid tax service. This means we give you a fixed quote for taxes before you even ship out. Once you make that payment, you can forget about taxes.
Generally, we encourage customers to opt for this service as it can help remove their uncertainties and provide a seamless shipping experience.
But there is a case to post-pay your taxes when relocating because some countries offer tax exemptions for relocators, which can add up to significant savings.
Our recommendation is that for the majority, you can post-pay your taxes, with the expectation that there may or may not be a tax exemption, and that in the event of an exemption, there may be some paperwork you have to do to get the exemption.
For very budget-insensitive, time-sensitive relocators who want to avoid hassle at all costs, you can still opt to pre-pay your taxes with us!
How should I declare my items?
Relocators ship many items. To minimise your effort needed to declare items, and yet still ensure a smooth relocation, we recommend to strike a balance as follows:
- Group up similar items into the same box, and declare them by product categories e.g. books, kitchenware, documents, bags, speaker set, photoframes
- Make sure to specify that they are "used" or "old
- For the declared value i.e. current value of the item, don't declare something ridiculously low like SGD 1 for a whole box of items. Something like SGD 50 for a total of 20 pieces of old clothes could still make sense

How should I prepare my items for collection?
If you plan to use our packing services, we can pick-up your items unpacked! Preferably, the items will still be in carriers so that our courier can ensure a fast collection process.
Also, we are able to pick-up and transport fragile items. Of course, if you are worried for particular items that are fragile, feel free to wrap them with added padding although there's no need to. It also helps if you label the carriers that have fragile items so the courier takes added precautions.
Will JustShip pack the items into boxes in the way that I specify?
By default, we will pack your items into boxes in a way that optimises for shipping savings and secure packing.
For example, we may pack books and clothes together into a box to balance the actual and volumetric weight of the box and minimise shipping costs for you.
If you want your items packed in the way you declared on your shipment form, simply let us know in the additional comments at the end of the form. We will make sure to follow your instructions!
